Steampunk: |
If you ask people on the street about Steampunk, it's quickly apparent they either already get it or they don't have a clue what you're talking about. But even for those who get it, explaining it is a whole different story. You might find a succinct and technical definition on Wikipedia, but anyone who has ever read (or worse, written it!), knows its boundaries are as fuzzy as a wisp of steam in the wind.

What we talk about when we talk about Steampunk: |
C William Perkins: A Sci-fi Western, with plenty of attitude.
LS Kilroy: Dark, neo-Victorian/Edwardian Gothic-meets-Gatsby with some technology that borders on the fantastical. William J Jackson: Science Fiction in reverse. Retropunk. But steam is the predominant technology, whether in Victorian East Jabip or Feudal Mongolia. Patricia Loofbourrow: I like the 'punk' side of steampunk - more gritty realism and less shiny hopeful than most. Karen Carlisle: Victorian mystery, leaning toward Gaslamp. Where the bad guy (or girl) is always the hero to their own story. |
